Thoughts on Teaching from Maureen O'Doogan
I have two goals when teaching. Goal number 1: I want to make myself obsolete. If my students start developing their own ideas and have the courage and understanding to implement them, they will no longer need someone to guide them through their next project. How do we get there? By focusing on why and how things work; I don't want to simply tell someone what to do next. I want to encourage them to experiment and to develop courage to continue when their first try doesn't quite turn out. Through this process, they develop confidence to branch out and try things on their own.
Goal number 2: I want everyone's project to turn out different. I want their project to reflect them, not me. If everyone's project turns out looking just like the class model, then we've missed out on an opportunity for personal expression. Bringing our true selves to our work enhances our pieces - and our lives.
